Osoyoos Water is Precious
The Osoyoos Branch of the Okanagan Regional Library celebrates water in March with a display of books and materials from the Osoyoos Lake Water Quality Society.

The Osoyoos Lake Water Quality Society has been monitoring Osoyoos Lake since 1991. We have been collecting data from 4 regions of the lake at 2 meter intervals from bottom to top. We test for temperature, dissolved oxygen, specific Conductance, pH, water clarity. Our data can be found on our website osoyooslake.ca We share our data with the Ministry of Environment and groups such as the Okanagan Nations Alliance, Okanagan Basin Water Board and even the Federal Environment Ministry all use and view our data. The International Joint Commission also uses our data.
Our mandate also includes protecting Osoyoos Lake. We do this by bringing in speakers such OASISS, ONA, Invasive Mussel Defense Program etc. We write and distribute information on the lake and how to keep invasive aquatic species and other pollutants out of our lake. We paint yellow fish by storm drains, we have pole banners and trash can decals . We enlist the community and school groups to participate in an annual shoreline cleanup. We also have a Facebook page where we post relevant lake issues and events and speak about invasive aquatic species, such as invasive yellow clams, the parasite that causes whirling disease and of course the zebra and quagga mussels.
Our Society is wholly volunteer driven. We engage in various fund raising activities while also writing grants for big items like our boat and our computerized equipment.
